How do I know which training program is right for my dog?

Cotati Dog Training will work with you to assess your dog's needs and recommend the most suitable training program. There are a variety of services to meet different needs and goals.

What types of training do you offer?

Cotati Dog Training offers a variety of training options including puppy training, basic obedience, advanced obedience, behavior modification, therapy dog training, Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training, introducing a new family member, day training (trainer takes dog for 4 hours of training then transfers new skills to owner), phone consultations, behavioral evaluations and other specialized training  designed to meet the needs of both dogs and their families. What methods do you use for training?

Cotati Dog Training uses positive reinforcement techniques, focusing on rewarding good behavior to encourage learning. This approach is science-based and tailored to each dog’s unique personality and needs.

 

What should I bring to a training session?

For training sessions please bring a collar or harness, a 5-6’ leash, your dog’s favorite treats and toys and any training tools recommended by Cotati Dog Training for your specific needs. If you are attending a group class, please make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and bring the most recent vaccine history if it wasn’t submitted it prior to the first class.

 

Where do training sessions take place?

Training sessions can be conducted at the location of your choice: your home, at a local park, or in some cases in the care of the trainer.

 

How do I book a training session?

You can book a session by calling, scheduling via Services Page or sending an email or text. It is recommended that you schedule in advance as appointments fill up quickly.

 

Can you help with house-breaking my puppy?

Yes. Cotati Dog Training offer comprehensive puppy training that includes housebreaking. Trainer will provide you with tips and strategies to successfully housebreak your puppy. 

 

Do you offer training for specific behavioral issues?

Yes. Cotati Dog Training offers training for a variety of behavioral issues including reactivity to other dogs, anxiety, excessive barking, and more. Trainer will work with you to develop a customized plan to address your dog's specific needs.

 

How long does it take to train a dog?

The duration of training depends on various factors including your dog's age, breed, temperament, type of training and reinforcement at home. Trainer will assess your dog's needs and provide an estimated timeline for achieving your training goals. Basic obedience training typically takes around 8 weeks, while behavioral modification may take longer.

 

Do you train older dogs?

Yes. Dogs of all ages can learn new behaviors. Training an older dog may take more patience, but with consistency and positive reinforcement, they can improve significantly.

 

What if my dog doesn’t respond to training?

Every dog learns at their own pace. If your dog is struggling, the trainer will adjust training techniques and work with you to find the best approach for success.

 

Do you offer a guarantee on training results?

While Cotati Dog Training cannot guarantee specific results in all cases, we are committed to working with you and your dog to achieve the best possible outcome. Success depends on consistency, patience, practice, and reinforcement at home.

 

Do you provide training for specific breeds?

Cotati Dog Training works with all breeds, ages and sizes. Methods are adaptable to suit the unique traits of different breeds and learning styles.​

Yes. Cotati Dog Training provides follow-up support to ensure long-term success. This may include refresher sessions, online resources, text/email support, and continued guidance as needed.

What training method is the most effective?

Positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desirable behavior, is one of the most effective methods. This help to creates a strong bond between you and your dog.

How do I stop my dog from jumping on people?

Redirect their attention by teaching them an alternate behavior like sitting calmly when greeting people or going their bed. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key.

 

How do I stop my dog from barking excessively?

Identify the reason for the barking (e.g., boredom, anxiety, excitement) and address it. Teaching the "quiet" command can help, combined with positive reinforcement and redirection to an alternate behavior. Ensure your dog has adequate regular physical exercise and mental stimulation and engage in confidence building activities with the dog. These methods collectively enhance your dog's behavior and well-being.

 

What should I do if my dog is aggressive towards other dogs or people?

Aggression should be handled with care and professional guidance. Have a conversation with your veterinarian to discuss the behavior. Avoid punishment-based methods and instead teach your dog an alternate behavior, and/or counter conditioning to modify the undesirable behavior. Ask a trainer for help in designing a customized behavior modification plan for your dog.

 

How do I house train my puppy?

Establish a consistent routine for bathroom breaks, keep puppy in sight, potty often, and praise your puppy for going outside. Patience and consistency are essential. 

 

Can training help with separation anxiety?

Yes, training can help alleviate anxiety in dogs by employing techniques such as gradual desensitization, counter-conditioning, ensuring adequate physical exercise and mental stimulation, and engaging in confidence building activities with the dog. These methods collectively enhance your dog's behavior and well-being. More extreme separation anxiety may require consultation with a veterinarian.

Should I use a prong collar for training?

Prong collars remain controversial; many trainers prefer positive reinforcement training techniques over aversive methods to avoid negative associations and potential harm done with training tools used incorrectly.

 

Should I use a shock/e-collar for training?

No, this can be extremely harmful to your dog and may damage the relationship you have with your dog. If you feel this is needed please consult a professional dog trainer with extensive experience in the proper use of electronic collars.

 

How do I deal with my dog’s chewing behavior?

To prevent your dog from chewing inappropriate items, provide appropriate chew toys, supervise your dog, and calmly redirect them when they chew on inappropriate items to safe, engaging, and rotate acceptable chew objects.

 

Is group training or private one-on-one lessons better for my dog?

Both can be beneficial, depending on your dog’s needs. One-on-one sessions provide personalized attention, while group classes help with socialization and teaching obedience in a distracting environment.

 

What are the most important "commands" my dog should learn?

Basic commands like sit, stay, come, down, off, up, yes, no and leave it are essential for your dog’s safety and your relationship. These commands lay the foundation for more complex training.

 

How can I keep my dog engaged during training?

Use treats your dog likes, keep training sessions short and fun, and vary the activities. If your dog gets bored or frustrated, take breaks and adjust the training to match their energy level. End training on a high note, before the dog loses interest.

 

Can my dog be trained to do tricks or perform tasks?

Yes. Dogs can be trained to do tricks like shake, roll over, fetch: or assist with tasks for people with disabilities. Training tricks is a fun way to bond and keep your dog mentally stimulated. 

 

How do I know if my dog is learning?

Look for signs of improvement and a dog that is happily engaged in the training process. Is your dog starting to understand and respond to cues or commands? Even small progress is a sign of learning.

 

What if my dog doesn’t respond to training?

It’s important to assess whether the training methods, timing and rewards are right for your dog. Consider working with a professional trainer if you feel stuck.

 

How do I train my dog to stop pulling on the leash?

Teach loose-leash walking by rewarding your dog when they walk calmly beside you. Avoid jerking the leash; instead, stop moving when they pull and only continue when they return to your side or offer you a release of tension on the leash. 

 

How often should I train my dog?

Short, frequent training sessions (5-15 minutes, 1-3 times daily for adult dogs, 3-5 minutes, 1-3 times daily for puppies) are more effective than long sessions. Consistency is key, but make sure it’s fun for both you and your dog! Stop training at a high point for your dog. Even 5  minutes a day can make a big difference.
